AI 炒作和散播 AI 恐懼降溫
2017 年可能是散播 AI 恐懼和 AI 炒作的一年，而 2018 年這些「宣傳」開始降溫。儘筦一些大人物繼續發表關於 AI 恐懼的言論，但他們或許太忙了，沒把這件事噹作日程重點。同時，媒體等群體在對待這個問題時似乎變得較為平靜，儘筦自動駕駛汽車和類似的技術不斷發展，但不會立刻成真。也就是說，仍然有聲音在抵抗「約束 AI 而不是約束 AI 產出」的糟糕主意。
更加關注具體問題
過去這一年，人們的關注點似乎轉移到可以解決的更具體問題。例如，關於公平性的討論增多，不止很多學術會議在談論這個話題，一些在線課程（如穀歌開發的課程）也在討論公平性。
這一年，可解釋性、解釋（explanation）、因果關係等問題也得到了廣氾討論。因果關係似乎重新引起了大傢的注意，這主要是因為 Judea Pearl 著作《The Book of Why》的問世。Judea Pearl 不僅決定寫下自己的第一本「通俗」讀物，他還在 Twitter 上鼓勵大傢討論因果關係。實際上，即使最通俗的媒體也把因果關係描述為現有 AI 技術的「挑戰」，甚至 ACM Recommender Systems Conference 的最佳論文就在講如何在嵌入中納入因果關係（《Causal Embeddings for Recommendations》）。也就是說,無塵室工程，很多作者認為因果關係某種程度上是一種理論偏移，我們應該重新關注更具體的問題，如可解釋性或解釋。說到解釋，這方面的一大亮點是 Anchor 論文和代碼的發佈（Anchors: High-Precision Model-Agnostic Explanations），這是著名的 LIME 模型作者的後續之作。

今年最有趣的進展實際上出現在 NLP 領域。如果非要我選擇今年印象最深刻的 AI 應用，那麼我選擇的兩個都是關於 NLP 的（而且都來自穀歌）。第一個是 Smart Compose，第二個是 Duplex 對話係統。
NLP 的大量進展受到使用語言模型這一思路的啟發，ULMFiT 使大傢了解到語言模型的力量（參見：NLP 領域的 ImageNet 時代到來：詞嵌入「已死」,鋼木門，語言模型噹立）。我們看到很多其他（以及改進版）方法，如 Allen 的 ELMO、Open AI 的 transformer

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — After playing perhaps his worst game as a pro on the biggest stage he's had in three seasons in the NFL, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr wanted to get back on the field the day after his loss in Kansas City.
It hadn't happened in games much at all this season for Carr and the Raiders, who have used their high-powered passing game to become one of the top teams in the league.
But Carr struggled to get the ball to either Cooper or Crabtree last week as they combined for 50 yards receiving on 17 targets. One pass in particular, still haunts Oakland.
Instead, Carr will have to wait 10 days for another shot when Oakland (10-3) visits San Diego (5-8) on Sunday.
"Starting 0-10 was not fun," Carr said Wednesday. "It makes these moments so awesome. It makes these moments really to already have 10 wins. I know for our team our sole focus is beating the Chargers because if we don't, we're still hoping and wishing."

On hearing the news that LSU's Leonard Fournette and Stanford's Christian McCaffery were ditching their respective bowl games to begin preparations for the NFL draft, he blamed the decision on the college football's power-that-be to switch from an all-bowl format to a playoff.
Grayson Allen sure picked a lousy week to take college sports on a bad trip down memory lane.
To be fair, the kids are plenty culpable. They know the rules,WBC Jerseys, and the overwhelming majority abide by them. Every big-time athletic program has at least one full-time compliance officer, and some employ as many as seven or eight. But let's be honest. Money keeps flowing into big-time college sports and the pockets of coaches and administrator because they've effectively become a minor-league system for the NFL and NBA. If that no longer outrages the rest of us, at least those same coaches and administrators can spare us the lecture about how much they care. Most of them genuinely care about their guys and would love to see them get through four years — or less — covered with nothing but glory.
To be fair, the incidents vary widely in consequence and have only so much in common. But at the core of each is a serious lapse in judgment by college-age kids and the grown-ups who are supposed to be in charge. Their sense of entitlement has only swelled in proportion to the dollars flowing into the coffers of every big-time college program.
What Krzyzewski couldn't have known at either moment was that Allen's latest trip was looping endlessly on Twitter and television, reinforcing what other images and headlines have made all too apparent about the state of big-time college sports in the last few weeks:
If you have doubts — and a strong stomach — go find the two-year-old, but-just-released video of Oklahoma football player Joe Mixon punching a woman in the face in 2014. Or read the stories about how Minnesota's football team pledged to boycott an upcoming bowl game to protest the suspensions of 10 players in connection with a sexual assault investigation; or how other players are voluntarily snubbing their teams' bowl games to prepare for next year's NFL draft.
In the Mixon case, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops originally suspended the player for the entire 2014 season. But after the video was made public this week, Stoops said that had Mixon done what he did in 2016, he'd kick him off the team. Like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's similarly tortured mea culpa in the Ray Rice affair, it was too little, too late.

But even that small measure of justice required Coach K to do a little reflecting of his own. Minnesota is another team without its starting QB — Teddy Bridgewater wrecked his left knee in practice and is gone for the season. The Vikings dealt for Sam Bradford this week, but how soon he will be ready is a huge unknown.
Some have pegged the Bucs as a rising team, and they have the offense to be dangerous behind Jameis Winston, Doug Martin and Mike Evans. Is their pass rush upgraded enough.
"We don't want to major in putting hurdles out there," coach Rex Ryan said during training camp. "But we seem to be doing a pretty good job of it right now."
Cincinnati at the New York Jets
With Matt Forte gone, it will be intriguing to see what the Bears' running game looks like.
On Monday night, the doubleheader has Pittsburgh at Washington and the Rams — yes, representing Los Angeles — at San Francisco.
"There's so much going on right now," Garoppolo said. "Mentally, I'm straight Arizona, but it is a phenomenal opportunity. This is why you play the game. You play to be in the game and play; you don't want to be the backup. The opportunity is here. I've just got to go take advantage of it."

Pittsburgh at Washington, Monday night
The season kicked off Thursday night with Denver's 21-20 victory over Carolina in a rematch of the Broncos' Super Bowl victory. Carolina's Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.
Seemingly the focal point for most people watching the 49ers is Colin Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem. Whether he does or not, Chip Kelly debuts as San Francisco's coach.
Even worse, the Seahawks seem to be on a mission, with a nasty defense, productive offense and everything in place for another Super Bowl run — if their offensive line coalesces.
Kansas City also will be minus some key players, including star linebacker Justin Houston and running back Jamaal Charles. Coach Andy Reid said it's "a stretch" to expect Charles to suit up.
If the Jaguars' rebuild is nearing completion, these are the kind of games they need to win. Or at the very least, be competitive.

A 30-28 loss to the Falcons in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs stung and lingered.
Against Atlanta, the No. 1 seed in the NFC that season, Seattle appeared outclassed, falling behind 20-0 at halftime and 27-7 entering the fourth quarter.

But the situation is significantly different for Seattle.
But that loss also became the foundation for two NFC championships, a Super Bowl title and two more playoff appearances.

And while the people involved have changed significantly since that game, the circumstances are just as meaningful for Seattle when it travels to Atlanta for a divisional round playoff game on Saturday.
"We felt like we were far, but we still had a long way to go," Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said. "Kind of like woke us up, but it definitely made us hungry too because when you feel like you have a great team that should win it all and you lose ... and you sit there in the offseason and watch the other teams win, it gives you that hunger to come into the next season prepared and I think that's what happened."

Seattle does not blitz extensively, putting most of the onus on the defensive line to get to the quarterback. In passing situations, Seattle has regularly chosen speed over size, using Cassius Marsh and Bennett on the inside, with Clark and Avril rushing from the edges. It's worked in stretches this season, but not recently.
